Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is unlikely to play against Louisiana Tech as he continues recovering from an ankle injury, but reports indicate he may be available when the Bears begin Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26.
Lagway sustained a high-ankle sprain during Baylor’s 17-16 season-opening loss to Auburn. He remained in that game and finished with 333 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception. A wrap was visible on his ankle after the injury.
The injury kept Lagway out of Baylor’s next game against Prairie View A&M. Nate Bennett started in his place and completed 24 of 36 passes for 314 yards in a 44-3 Baylor victory. Bennett also threw three touchdown passes and scored another touchdown on the ground.
Baylor is scheduled to play Louisiana Tech on Saturday, with Lagway listed as doubtful. If he cannot play, Bennett is expected to start for a second straight game. Baylor coach Dave Aranda has said Lagway felt good during a Sunday practice, and the quarterback was expected to take part in team practices during the week.
The latest report from On3’s Pete Nakos described Lagway as trending toward a return for the Colorado game. That matchup is Baylor’s Big 12 opener, while Colorado is scheduled to play Northwestern before traveling to face the Bears. The game is set for 10 a.m. Mountain Time on Sept. 26.
