Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, a concussion, and other injuries following an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields in the locker room. According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star Telegram, the incident occurred on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
Fields, who was reportedly unhappy with Ezukanma's performance in practice, allegedly punched him in the head while Ezukanma was sitting and looking at his phone. Witnesses stated that after the initial punch, Fields kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, causing him to lose consciousness. Ezukanma later told police he only remembered being in the training room and asking teammates what had happened.
Ezukanma was taken to the hospital after reporting severe headaches and ringing in his ears. Initial scans confirmed a brain bleed, leading to his transfer to the ICU. He underwent multiple CT scans during his stay, with one scan revealing that the hematoma had grown. He was discharged on August 16, having also suffered a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields, who was dismissed from the team on August 18, turned himself in to authorities and was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Following the incident, Fields expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating he made an emotional decision and offered to cover Ezukanma's hospital bills.
