The Dallas Cowboys began the 2026 NFL season with a 28-20 defeat against the New York Giants, with coach Brian Schottenheimer pointing to execution problems and mistakes by several younger players after the game.
Schottenheimer said Dallas did not meet its usual performance level and struggled on offense and defense. He specifically discussed missed defensive opportunities involving Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, including plays in which Dart escaped outside the pocket.
Dart passed for 230 yards and ran for 54 yards, using his mobility to create problems for the Cowboys. Dallas also committed eight penalties totaling 85 yards. A taunting penalty against Javonte Williams after a touchdown moved Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt farther back.
Schottenheimer said he accepted responsibility for the team’s discipline problems while also saying the players shared responsibility. He described the loss as a humbling experience and said the Cowboys did not start quickly enough on either side of the ball.
Dallas received 175 passing yards from Dak Prescott, who completed 22 of 34 attempts and threw touchdown passes to CeeDee Lamb and Williams. Williams also scored on a rushing play, but the Cowboys were unable to overcome their mistakes. The team will host Washington next Sunday, according to the source.
