Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is not expected to play Saturday against Prairie View A&M after sustaining an ankle injury in the Bears’ season-opening loss to Auburn. It is not yet clear whether Lagway will dress or be available in a limited role, and the injury is not expected to keep him out long term.
Pete Thamel reported the update Friday, saying Nate Bennett is expected to make his first career start for Baylor. Bennett has spent several years in the program and has appeared briefly as a backup, but he has not previously started a game for the Bears.
Lagway was hurt during the Auburn game but finished with 333 passing yards and two touchdowns. Baylor lost after a potential game-winning two-point conversion attempt came up short.
The game against Prairie View A&M will be followed by a matchup with Louisiana Tech in Week 3. Baylor’s schedule also includes a game against BYU in mid-November, along with late-season contests against Texas Tech and Houston. The source stated that the Bears do not currently have a ranked opponent before the BYU game.
Lagway transferred to Baylor after two seasons at Florida. During the 2025 season, he went 4-8 as a starter and threw five interceptions in a game against LSU, while also leading Florida to a win over Texas.
