A defense attorney for former TCU football player Jacob Fields claims that the coaching staff was aware of escalating tensions on the practice field prior to a locker room fight on August 13. Fields, who is facing an aggravated assault charge, allegedly injured teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed.
Lawyer Coby DuBose disputes claims made in the arrest warrant affidavit, which alleges that Fields sucker-punched Ezukanma. DuBose asserts that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him before the altercation began.
He maintains that Fields had previously informed the coaching staff about his frustrations regarding rough treatment during practices, stating, "We stand by the idea that Jacob had repeatedly told coaching staff that he was tired of being cheap-shotted."
DuBose believes that the TCU coaching staff failed to take the situation seriously and could have intervened to prevent the fight. He described the incidents leading up to the altercation as going beyond normal football roughness, citing instances of being spit on and illegal hits. Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, supported DuBose's claims, indicating that unnecessary aggression was present in practices.
In response, a source within the TCU football program disputed DuBose's allegations, and athletic director Mike Buddie stated that the coaching staff managed the situation appropriately. The source, who requested anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, expressed doubts about the accounts provided by DuBose and Miller.
