Tommy Castellanos’ role at Texas Tech remains uncertain after two games, with the veteran quarterback contributing three touchdowns while also making a costly interception. Red Raiders Wire reported that Castellanos has been used alongside starter Will Hammond in specialized offensive situations.
Castellanos arrived in Lubbock late in preseason camp as an emergency backup after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation was resolved. Texas Tech added him while Hammond continues recovering from a torn ACL, but the team’s decision to use him has produced mixed results.
Against Houston, Castellanos started and threw an interception on the opening play while attempting to send the ball out of bounds, according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde. He later returned for red-zone work and scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said after the game that Hammond remains the starting quarterback, while Castellanos will continue to have packages within the offense. Forde included Castellanos’ role among his 10 questions that could help shape the college football season.
