A fast start that did not last
The San Antonio Spurs looked sharp early in a preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Frost Bank Center, scoring 39 points in the first quarter and leading 39-20 after one period. Atlanta answered with 42 points in the second quarter and trimmed the gap to 69-62 at halftime.

The second half belonged to the visitors. Atlanta outscored San Antonio 31-26 in the third quarter and 30-21 in the fourth, a 61-47 edge after halftime, and won 123-116. The announced crowd was 18,354.
Who produced
Dylan Harper led San Antonio with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, plus four assists and four rebounds. Stephon Castle and David Jones Garcia each scored 14, and Keldon Johnson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Asa Newell matched Harper with 16 points for Atlanta. Kingston Flemings added 15 points and a team-high five assists, CJ McCollum and Dyson Daniels each scored 13, and Daniels pulled down 11 rebounds.
The game was an exhibition, so neither result counts toward the regular-season standings. ESPN lists Atlanta at 1-1 and San Antonio at 0-1 in preseason play.
