Barbara Crotty, originally from New York state, has resided in the Fairmount Historic District of Near Southside Fort Worth since 2019. After retiring from nursing, she relocated from Houston, where she had lived for many years, to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, who moved to the nearby Ryan Place neighborhood in 2016.
Crotty purchased a turn-of-the-century Craftsman bungalow that had been restored to its period style, a decision influenced by her appreciation for the area's mature trees, walkability, and older homes.
Upon joining the Fairmount Neighborhood Association before officially moving in, Crotty became involved in local activities such as the Fairmount Community Garden, the annual Tour of Historic Homes, and street festivals on Magnolia Avenue, including Open Streets and ArtsGoggle. She noted that the neighborhood’s inclusivity was evident through the responsiveness of residents on the Fairmount Facebook page.
In one instance, when she requested a wheelchair loan, a neighbor delivered one to her porch within 30 minutes.
Crotty’s retirement routine includes volunteering on the neighborhood association board, participating in environmental initiatives with the Greater Fort Worth Sierra Club, and engaging with the Fort Worth Newcomers Club. She also attends the TCU Silver Frogs lifelong learning program.
Living near TCU, the Fort Worth Zoo, the museum district, and medical facilities is a significant benefit, as is being just one mile from her two grandsons.
