A fatal collision involving a garbage truck occurred on U.S. Highway 287 in Fort Worth, resulting in the death of the driver and critical injuries to a passenger. The incident took place around 6 p.m. in the 3500 block of the highway, also designated as Martin Luther King Freeway, at the intersection with Erath Street.
Fort Worth Police and Fire Departments confirmed that the vehicle left the roadway and struck support pillars beneath the Erath Street overpass.
The driver was ejected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Authorities have not released the names of the two men involved, citing the need to notify their families first. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
The impact caused significant damage to the bridge supports, prompting officials to close all lanes of U.S. 287 in both directions at Erath Street. Police indicated that the highway may remain closed for seven to 10 days while crews assess the structural integrity of the overpass and determine the scope of necessary repairs.
The Texas Department of Transportation stated that its teams are working to evaluate the damage to the bridge and highway, aiming to restore normal traffic as soon as conditions permit.
