The R.D. Evans Community Center in Fort Worth has opened its doors to residents displaced by a fire at the Mariposa Park Apartments. The incident occurred on August 25, prompting the American Red Cross and local community partners to activate shelter operations at the facility.
Chino Gregory, a community center aide and longtime youth sports coach, has been assisting with the response. Although the fire did not impact his own residence, Gregory joined staff and volunteers to support those in need. He noted that this is the fourth emergency response in which he has witnessed the Red Cross collaborate with the city of Fort Worth to assist residents.
Gregory emphasized his long-standing commitment to service, stating, "I've always been a huge advocate of volunteering." He explained that his initial connection to the city began through volunteer coaching for youth sports, a role he held for more than ten years. This dedication to community support has continued into the current disaster relief efforts.
The community center typically operates from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., offering programs for seniors and the general public. In response to the shelter needs, staff members have adjusted their schedules and operations to accommodate the displaced residents. Gregory described the staff's reaction to the sudden change in duties, saying, "When this happened, everybody was flexible and understanding."
