All main lanes of U.S. Highway 287 at Erath Street in Fort Worth will remain shut down for seven to ten days to allow officials to assess damage to an overpass bridge column. The extended closure follows a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday evening.
Fort Worth police stated that a garbage truck carrying two occupants struck several supporting pillars while trying to exit the roadway. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital.
Texas Department of Transportation traffic cameras recorded the incident at 6:47 p.m. on Wednesday. Emergency crews worked through the night to clear debris and secure the area before announcing the continuous closures early Thursday morning.
Northbound traffic on U.S. 287 will be rerouted to exit at Wilbarger Street. Southbound drivers must use the Berry Street or Vaughn Boulevard exits instead. Authorities are urging motorists to seek alternate routes and avoid the vicinity while repair work continues.
