The main travel lanes of U.S. 287 at Erath Street in Fort Worth will remain shut for several days following a fatal collision that damaged an overpass structure. Police announced the closure and detour plans on social media, stating that repair work is anticipated to require between seven and ten days.
Northbound motorists are being rerouted to exit at Wilbarger Street, while southbound drivers must use the exits at Berry Street or Vaughn Boulevard. The full shutdown of all southbound lanes occurred around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, according to police updates issued after the initial response.
Fort Worth police arrived at the scene near 6 p.m. in the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Freeway. Authorities reported that a garbage truck left the roadway and collided with multiple supporting pillars beneath the bridge spanning Erath Street.
The impact threw the driver from the vehicle, resulting in his death at the scene. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased man as 33-year-old Tyler Bradley Shivers. His passenger, Ruben Saenz, was transported to a hospital in critical condition, police said. Family members confirmed Saenz’s identity to WFAA-TV.
