A pilot died Wednesday morning when a small single-engine aircraft crashed and burned in far north Fort Worth, near Hicks Airfield, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.

At a news conference, fire officials said the first report came in around 9:55 a.m. from Bonds Ranch Road, on the stretch from Business 287 to Willow Springs Road. Firefighters found the aircraft in flames. After putting out the fire, they found one man inside, and he died at the scene.

The plane came down near a residential neighborhood but did not strike any houses, officials said. It knocked down power lines and started a grass fire, which crews put out. Power to nearby homes has since been restored.

"It did not hit any homes," fire officials said. "There were no other injuries. It was an isolated incident here, and nobody else was involved."

Investigators could not yet say whether the plane was departing, heading toward an airport or what its flight path had been. Officials said the plane was already down when the first 911 call came in.

Federal Aviation Administration staff were on site Wednesday, while the National Transportation Safety Board had investigators on the way. The two agencies will work together to determine what caused the crash.

Fort Worth police shut that section of Bonds Ranch Road on Wednesday while crews worked at the site.
