Tyler Shivers, a 33-year-old Waste Management driver, died after his vehicle collided with an overpass support beam in Fort Worth. The incident occurred on Wednesday, and a passenger riding in the truck sustained injuries. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with smoke and debris filling the area immediately after the impact.
Marcus Hawkins, who was seated in a nearby vehicle, observed the truck drift between lanes before striking a slope and hitting the beam. He and another man rushed to the scene, using pocket knives to assist in freeing the driver from the wreckage.
Hawkins noted that the air was difficult to breathe due to smoke, and he used his shirt to cover his face while helping to lift the driver out of the truck. The driver’s pants became caught on debris during the extraction process, but the group managed to pull him free.
Abby Zuñiga, a nearby resident, initially attributed a large vibration to lightning before running outside to investigate. She described the immediate fear among onlookers that the vehicle might catch fire or that the bridge structure would fail. Zuñiga stated that it was evident the driver was no longer alive and that she covered his body.
She also spoke with the families of both men at the scene, expressing her grief over the event.
