Approximately 1,300 individuals participated in the Dallas-Fort Worth 9/11 Heroes Run held Saturday in Arlington. The event marked the first time the nationwide program has been hosted in North Texas.
The gathering took place at the National Medal of Honor Museum. Attendees could choose from a 5k run, a 1k run, a walk, or a ruck march. The activity welcomed participants of all ages and fitness levels to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The annual race is sponsored by CVS Health and is now in its 19th year. It serves to honor those killed in the September 11 attacks as well as individuals who have died in wars and conflicts since that time.
This year's one-mile run and walk was dedicated to the memory of LT Brendan Looney, a Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan in 2010. His wife, Amy Looney Heffernan, serves as president of the Travis Manion Foundation.
Looney was the Naval Academy roommate and best friend of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Marine killed in Iraq in 2007. The two men are buried side by side at Arlington National Cemetery.
