A Fort Worth-based illustrator named Cliff has found his artwork featured prominently during the FIFA World Cup in Dallas, creating opportunities for global engagement that extend beyond his usual freelance work.
Cliff, who primarily creates illustrations for the music industry, noted that his typical routine involves working alone in his office. The widespread visibility of his poster design has allowed him to interact directly with fans and sign autographs, experiences he described as distinct from his standard professional life.
The design, which incorporates Texas imagery, was licensed by multiple companies for use on various consumer products. These items include beach towels, T-shirts, and water bottles. Cliff does not receive financial compensation from the sales of these licensed goods. Instead, he views the broad distribution as a significant professional payoff.
He explained that designing for a global audience requires leaning into recognizable cultural stereotypes. He cited the presence of cowboy hats among Swedish fans at a match as evidence that his artistic choices resonated with international viewers. This validation confirmed that the imagery connected with the intended audience.
