Fort Worth has told residents of the Ventana neighborhood to boil their tap water before using it, after a power outage at the Ventana Pump Station let water pressure drop below the minimum the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requires.

The city called the notice a precaution. When pressure falls that low, city officials said, bacteria can get into the system. Officials estimate about 1,400 accounts are affected.

Ventana sits in the far southwest corner of Fort Worth next to Benbrook. The city said the notice does not cover the City of Benbrook or the Benbrook Water Authority. Residents can look up their address on an interactive map on the City of Fort Worth's website to see whether they are inside the affected area.

Until the notice is lifted, water used for drinking, cooking and ice should be brought to a vigorous rolling boil, held there for two minutes and then cooled. Bottled water or another safe supply also works.

The city is handing out bottled water at Ventana Parkway and Barco Road, limited to one case per vehicle. The remaining distribution windows are Thursday evening, Oct. 15, from 6 to 9, and Friday morning, Oct. 16, from 6 to 9.

Crews are collecting bacteriological samples from the area, and the city said the tests take 24 hours to complete. Officials have not given a time for lifting the notice; the city said it will tell customers once testing shows the water is safe.
