The United States government has approved a potential foreign military sale valued at $800 million to provide new aircraft and support systems for the Iraqi Armed Forces. The transaction, processed through the Foreign Military Sales program, includes Bell 412EPX and Bell 407M helicopters along with a comprehensive package of armament, training, and logistical services.
The requested equipment list extends beyond the airframes to include GAU-19 three-barrel machine gun launchers, M260 rocket pods, and L3 WESCAM MX-15HDI electro-optical and infrared targeting systems. Additional items specified in the notification involve AN/AAR-60 Block 2 missile launch detection systems, very high frequency radios, spare parts, ground support equipment, and technical documentation.
Bell Textron, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is designated as the primary contractor for this potential operation. The Department of State indicated that the sale would enhance Iraq's rotary-wing capabilities for transport, reconnaissance, and air-to-surface target acquisition. The package also encompasses pilot and maintenance crew training, engineering services, technical assistance, and logistical support provided by the U.S. government and its contractors.
This authorization aligns with Baghdad's ongoing efforts to modernize its military aviation fleet and reduce reliance on Russian or Soviet-era platforms. During 2025, Iraq began receiving Airbus H225M Caracal helicopters intended to replace Mi-17 aircraft, whose operations have been complicated by international restrictions on Russia. The Iraqi Army currently operates a mixed inventory of American and Russian-made aircraft.
The potential deal builds upon an existing relationship between the U.S. manufacturer and Iraqi forces. Between 2024 and 2025, Bell Textron delivered 15 Bell 505 Jet Ranger training helicopters to the Iraqi Army for pilot instruction and light support duties. The company also provides maintenance services for other Bell aircraft already in service within the country.
