Chisholm Trail Parkway's $230.6 million widening toward Cleburne is due to wrap up in mid-2028, tollway authority says

Crews are adding a lane each way on about 13 miles of the toll road from FM 1187 in Tarrant County to U.S. 67 in Johnson County, with overnight and weekend ramp closures continuing.

Drivers who use the Chisholm Trail Parkway to reach Crowley, Burleson, Joshua or Cleburne have about a year and a half more of lane shifts and ramp closures ahead.

The North Texas Tollway Authority's $230.6 million widening began in September 2025, and the agency expects to finish in June 2028, NTTA media relations manager Michael Rey told The Dallas Morning News in a story published Saturday.

The work covers roughly 13 miles of the 27.6-mile toll road, between FM 1187 in Tarrant County and U.S. 67 in Johnson County, adding one lane in each direction.

"Widening should decrease congestion in each direction and provide a reliable driving experience," Rey said.

Why now

The parkway's first phase opened in 2014. An NTTA traffic study from 2024 projects traffic on its southern stretch will be more than 40% heavier in 2045, partly because of the added capacity, the paper reported. Rey said the cost is being covered entirely with toll revenue the authority reinvests.

The parkway itself came out of a partnership among NTTA, TxDOT, the regional council of governments, both counties, two railroads (Union Pacific and the Fort Worth and Western) and three cities: Fort Worth, Burleson and Cleburne.

Where crews are working

Much of the current work is on bridges, drainage and culverts along the full length of the project, along with earthwork and grading to get the roadbed ready for paving, according to Rey. Bridge decks are going on at the Don Lee Road and County Road 904 bridges.

The Buffalo Creek and County Road 1015 bridges are under construction, and crews are building the supports for the bridges at Sparks Road, County Road 920 and County Road 913.

On- and off-ramps continue to close overnight and on some weekends, with detours marked, Rey said. People living near the corridor can expect construction noise and short delays getting in and out as lanes shift.

Rey said crews are working in Crowley, Joshua, Burleson and Cleburne, and that those communities stand to gain a quicker link to Fort Worth once the extra lanes open.
